Information for parents PSHCE is split into 2 main areas-
1. PSHEE- Personal Social Health and Economic Education 2. Citizenship
PSHEEThis aspect of PSHCE teaches both personal and economic well being. Personal well being covers personal identities, healthy lifestyles, risk, relationships and diversity. Economic wellbeing covers careers, financial capability, risk and economic understanding. Many areas are covered within the PSHCE lessons but are also enhanced through other subjects (e.g. drugs in Science or healthy eating in Technology or finance in Business Studies)
CitizenshipCitizenship covers democracy and justice, rights and responsibilities and identities and diversity- living in the UK. Education for citizenship equips young people with the knowledge, skills and understanding to play an effective role in public life. Citizenship encourages them to take an interest in topical and controversial issues and the engage in discussion and debate. Pupils learn about their rights, responsibilities, duties and freedoms and about laws, justice and democracy. They learn to take part in decision-making and different forms of action. They play an active role in the life of their schools, neighbourhoods, communities and wider society as active and global citizens. Citizenship encourages respect for different national, religious and ethnic identities. It equips pupils to engage critically with and explore diverse ideas, beliefs, cultures and identities and the values we share as citizens in the UK. Pupils begin to understand how society has changed and is changing in the UK, Europe and the wider world. Many aspects of the Citizenship curriculum are enhanced by other subject areas as well as the PSHCE lessons.
Sex and Relationships EducationThis is a compulsory aspect of PSHCE and takes place in Year 9 and 10 and is completed over a 4 week period during the Summer Term. The lessons are delivered by a specialist team from the NHS/North Lincolnshire Council who work with all schools across North Lincolnshire. The lessons are enhanced by work in Science and RE. The content of the lessons encompasses the Catholic ethos of the school whilst dealing with an issue that is important to the development of young people in the school.
CareersCareers education takes place throughout KS3 and KS4. In Year 9 the students are involved with the Options process which helps students to make informed choices for GCSE. In Year 10 and 11 students are involved with Work Experience that enables them to gain an insight into the world of work via application and experiencing the workplace. Students are also interviewed by Connexions to give guidance and information to enable them to make choices for post-16 education. Both John Leggott College and North Lindsey College provide interviews and guidance to help the process of applying to college. Students are encouraged to apply for Apprenticeships with many local companies if they wish to follow that pathway beyond St Bede’s with many going to work for Corus over the last few years.
Visiting Speakers/PerformancesWithin the PSHCE programme there are many opportunities for visiting speakers to enhance the learning experience for the students. Over the last few years this has included the Police on Knife Crime, Humberside Fire and Rescue on fire safety and John Leggott College and North Lindsey College on work experience. The school has close links with the local road safety partnership and this has led to several performances being held on this subject. Years 7, 9 and 11 are involved with road safety performances on being safe walking to school, seat belt wearing and young driver attitudes.
